THE KAU DAKE KA WALL CHART

The Kau Dake Ka Wall Chart is central to the teaching process in the Learning Centres. It is based on the Kau Dake workbook, which engages the children with meaningful activities and exercises and helps teachers to lead and guide their learning. The Kau Dake Ka workbook introduced teachers to a new paradigm of constructivist teaching without rules like SLRW (seeing-listening-reading-writing) etc. wherein they helped children build on understanding and skills that they already had. It gave children fun activities whereby they learnt, and guided teachers to develop their teaching lessons, in a systematic progression that would keep the interest of the children kindled all the time.

Conservation and Propagation of Indigenous Paddy

Leli Pradhani at a village meeting

Three years back while visiting Gulimusha Village of Dasamantpur Block in Koraput District, to discuss Organic Farming (for our campaign under Paramparagat Krishi Vikash Yojana), I met Leli Pradhani, the oldest farmer in the village. His face lit up when I told him that there would be an emphasis on going back to the farming system practised by his father and grandfather. Leli Pradhani asked me to get some paddy seeds which he had seen his father grow and named nearly 60 varieties like Haldichudi, Kalajeera, Machhakanta etc. I had committed that despite problems of resources, I would try.

It has been a real conspiracy, how all these local varieties of Paddy Seeds have vanished. This as has been spoken and written by Dr. Vandana Siva, Dr. Suman Sahay, and many others in the country, who have been at the forefront of saving indigenous Paddy despite the pressure to replace them with HYVs. Indigenous Paddy seeds are being conserved and propagated by Prof. Radhamohan and Ms. Sabarmatee at Sambhav, Mr. Natabar Sarangi of Desi Chasa Gabeshana Kendra, Mr. Netrananda Lenka, a Farmer near Jeypore (who has conserved 200 varieties of indigenous paddy), MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Jeypore and Dr. Debal Deb of Basudha at Muniguda. We visited all these organisations and individuals and have also sent tribal farmers to have first-hand knowledge of the local varieties of paddy seeds.

OUR JOURNEY

Agragamee began work in 1981 seeking to understand the paradox of poverty and hunger in a land of abundance. The challenges were immense. There were few roads to reach the villages, hunger and epidemics were inherent part of the yearly cycle, a small community of contractors and landlords reigned supreme, and there was little or no respect for the law. Our work began with discussions and dialogues with the people, community leaders, elected representatives and Government functionaries. This helped us understand the complex multi-layered systems of exploitation and coercion that people suffered. It also opened up the doors of perception to local community members to concepts of justice, equality, human rights, freedom and began a process of empowerment.
